School vouchers to be removed from Massive Education Bill
The Texas House has voted
to remove school vouchers from the $7 billion education funding bill,
effectively eliminating Gov. Greg Abbott's top priority. The 84-63 vote was in
favor of an amendment offered by Rep. John Raney of College Station, with 21
Republicans joining all Democrats in support. The bill, authored by Rep. Brad
Buckley, is a $7 billion omnibus bill that would increase the basic allotment from
$6,160 to $6,700 and adjust for inflation starting in the 2026-27 school year.
It also includes a one-time $4,000 bonus for full-time teachers, counselors,
nurses, and librarians. The key provision of the bill was school vouchers,
which would create education savings accounts for about 40,000 students who
exit the state's public education system.
